Area nightclub: there was nothing like it before and nothing like it since. The famed hub of debauchery and glamour stuck around from 1983 to 1987, when co-owner Eric Goode welcomed the likes of Bianca Jagger, Andy Warhol, and Grace Jones to an ever-evolving atmosphere of pure party. Every month or so the entire space transformed (with the help of art installations and taxidermy) to fit a new theme, ranging from Confinement and Suburbia to Science Fiction. Artists, models, pop stars, and even Mayor Ed Koch mixed and mingled here.
