A-Trak [A-Trak] Other details: Last night, Monster Children Magazine hosted a party to celebrate the launch of issue #43, which was curated by Mike Diamond of the legendary Beastie Boys rap group. The party was hosted at Dustin Yellin's gorgeous Pioneer Works studio in Red Hook, where a diverse crowd of skater kids, nightlife people, artists, and the fashion set came to celebrate the magazine. While the sun was still out, the entire crowd hung outside where drinks, pizza, and barbecue were served up. Mike D mingled with friends and fans alike, as his children ran around exploring the space, while Yellin, MGMT's Andrew VanWyngarden, and Ben Bronfman relaxed and sipped on Saint Archer beers. As DJ D-Nice spun music for the crowd, we caught up with owner and creative director of Monster Children Campbell Milligan: What does it mean to get Mike D to edit this issue for you? CM: It was really funny because one of the magazines that inspired us to start Monster Children was Grand Royal, so he had Grand Royal back in the day. We just did our 10 year issue and we thought 'what do we do after that?' and then we were introduced to Mike and he was down to do an issue. It was a really good culmination of what we had done the last 10 years, and then to have Mike was a pretty amazing thing. How did you come to choose this space for the party? CM: We've worked with Dustin a few years ago before he had this space, and then when we were doing this issue with Mike he said 'I really want to do something with Dustin,' who is our mutual friend. We came here and interviewed and shot him here, and he was like 'why don't you do the launch here?' so it was a natural progression. Monster Children Magazine Issue #43 Launch Surfing is a big part of the magazine and we happen to spend a lot of time in Montauk over the summer. Do you make it out to there often? CM: I've never been, I grew up in the Gold Coast in Queensland so I surf a lot back home in Australia, so when I'm in New York it's really to absorb the city. What's next for Monster Children? CM: We're going to go to Europe next, and after this [party] we go back to Sydney with Mike and then have a launch in Japan, so that will be pretty fun. Monster Children Magazine Issue #43 Launch For the rest of the night, guests maintained the good vibes and helped dwindle down the supply of Jameson, the drink of choice for most guests. Jenne Lombardo, Camille Rowe, and Nick Catchdubs all made it out to Red Hook to join the party. Guests were struggling to find copies of the magazine because the issue was a hit and most of the tables were cleared early in the night. Nonetheless, they all stuck around because the hosts enlisted none other than world famous DJ A-Trak to close out the night. The DJ played a string of hip-hop jams for over an hour, incorporating his signature scratches to keep the room mesmerized. Following the event, A-Trak even posted a picture of himself with Mike D on Instagram with the caption reading: @atrak: Here's a tip: never stop having heroes your whole life. The Beastie Boys basically raised me so it was an honor to DJ an event for Mike D tonight.
