CMJ Music Marathon
Other details: Starting last Tuesday, CMJ Music Marathon took over New York, once again bringing scores of emerging talent to music venues throughout NYC. The week kicked off with a bang, with DIIV taking over Brooklyn Night Bazaar on day one. Another headlining act, Cold War Kids, played at Brooklyn Bowl on the same night along with up-and-coming talent, Aurora. The next night we caught the buzzed-about band, Public Access T.V., at the Bowery Ballroom. The NYC band played a bunch of CMJ events, and we made sure to catch their smaller, intimate shows just in case the NME declaration that they're "New York's hottest band" remains true in a few years. We were definitely hooked with songs like "Rebounder," "In The Mirror," and their breakthrough song "Monaco."
While we caught The Kills at their pre-CMJ show for the clothing brand Moose Knuckles on Monday night, we couldn't help but stop by their show at Bowery Ballroom on Thursday. The band had the crowd mesmerized, with Alison Mosshart's undeniable stage presence. We also had to scurry over to Santos Party House records so we could check out Twin Peaks, a band who piqued our interest simply because of our love for all things David Lynch. The Chicago band played their signature garage sound found on their albums Sunken and Wild Onion, and proved to be one of the highlights of the week.

On Friday we caught the unofficial CMJ party at The Wooly, where Ludwig Persik performed. The band was on point, ahead of their next show in 3 weeks, even confidently breaking into a 10 minute jam during a song. Our next stop was the Foster the People show at United Palace Theater. Soko, the French singer we spoke to earlier in the day, opened the show which was two days before her birthday. She followed up with a special free birthday performance on Sunday as well.
