"Buffalo Warrior" by Chaz Guest Opens At The Broome Hotel
Where: Broome Hotel
Other details: On Friday the new exhibit "Buffalo Warrior" by Chaz Guest opened at the Broome Hotel with a reception hosted by Amanda Brown Artist Management. The event brought guests into the courtyard of the chic Soho hotel which is almost a hole-in-the-wall which only has a small sign outside beside a nondescript door. The courtyard wasn't outside, but rather lacked a rooftop allowing sunlight to shine in on 3 floors. Hanging by strings attached to the top floor ledge was one of Guest's most distinctive painting of the Buffalo Warrior, a character he created to completely deviate from his past works. The character came to Guest when he thought about one of his paintings of a small child picking cotton, and he considered the lack of African American superheroes set in a tumultuous time like the Civil War era. The skilled painter created the story, painted, and even created sculptures for the exhibit, and is working on a graphic novel and film adaptation of the work. The hotel also housed several of Guest's renowned past works—which have made him one of President Obama's favorite painters— including one which is included in their permanent collection. The exhibit will be up for 3 weeks.
