Out Of Order Magazine Issue 3 Launch Party
We also had the chance to talk to Out Of Order's founder Dorian Grinspan, who told us a little more about the new issue:
What was the focus of Issue 3?
The theme of the issue is introspection. We started thinking that it would be power, and then it turned out, interestingly, that we started interviewing only women. And I don't know, the cover came along and I thought introspection fitted well with it.
How do you choose a theme for each issue?
We started around power, and I think introspection fits power really well because it's about thinking, and reflecting upon yourself. I usually try to pick the cover according to the theme, and around that I build the issue. The cover is usually a story that's shot or at least edited or created by the artist themselves, and then I'll curate, like 'these are the people that I wanted to work with, that I haven't worked with yet.' We shot with Larry Clark again, but someone like Johan Lindeberg we've never shot with before. And we shot a movie with him that we're going to premiere soon. So it really just happens, and my editors suggest people to interview, and I met a few people randomly that I thought were really interesting so I interviewed them for the issue. It really happens like that.

The size of the magazine is the first thing people will notice; it's almost like a book. Was there a reason you chose to do it in this format?
I think you start an issue, and then you think 'we should do that, and we should do that...' and you end up with a pile of things. In general, we talk about how everything is digital, and I think that the magazines that really make sense as physical magazines are not necessarily things that you'll read once and throw away, but things you'll keep. So I think the aesthetic of it is very much geared towards that. Towards making...not a collectible...but something you'll want to put on a table and it looks nice, and you want to keep it that way.
Well it's going to be tough to walk around with one of these in a club tonight...
Well you should, it'll be great advertising (laughs).
How do you manage both school and running a magazine?
You know, you manage. I do both and I think being in two different locations makes it easier because I can compartmentalize my life, so when I'm at Yale I do my work and when I'm here I do the work for my magazine and it works out well. I go back and forth, 3 days at Yale and 4 days in New York, so that way it works.
