The Ear Inn is in the historical James Brown house which was built in 1770 during the American Revolution. When James Brown died the building became a bar with home-brewed beer and corn whiskey. During the prohibition era, the bar stayed open and became a prominent speakeasy, notorious for drinking and gambling.
The bar and restaurant got its name in the '70s when the owners wanted to avoid going through the Landmark Commission and so simply changed the name to Ear from Bar, just by painting over the neon sign. Smart, sneaky, and still a fun place for dinner and drinks.
