Dan O'Brien and Dave Johnson were considered the best of the best in the men's decathalon as they prepared for the 1992 summer Olympics in Barcelona. O'Brien was the 1991 world champion and therefore the favorite for the gold. Because of their high profile status, Reebok invested a large amount of money into a campaign called "Dan & Dave." However the Olympic trials did not go according to plan for O'Brien. On the Pole Vault section of the decathalon, he failed to clear the height on all three attempts which dropped him from first place, the twelfth and therefore did not make the team.
Reebok had to redo their entire campaign, and redid the commercials with Dan cheering on Dave, who went on to win the Bronze medal.
Dan O'Briend made up for his mistakes in the 1996 summer Olympics in Atlanta where he won the gold.
