Mirror, Mirror
The wardrobe of Snow White's characters received a second nomination at the 2013 Academy Awards for Eiko Ishioka's
Mirror, Mirror costumes. While you may not have heard of Eiko before, some of the most well-recognized designers such as Alexander McQueen and Viktor and Rolf have accredited her designs as inspiration. The flamboyant gowns of Mirror, Mirror would be the final project of Eiko's lifetime. Her resume included work on
Immortals,
The Fall, and
Bram Stoker's Dracula, which won the Oscar for costume design in 1992. Her costumes, while beautiful, eclectic, and exaggerated, are completely in tune with the mood of the movie.
Over 400 costumes of immense size were made for the movie. The Evil Queen and Snow White’s gowns extended a circumference of 5’8” to 6’, handmade from 25-35 yards of fabric, with huge wire cages and corsets underneath.
