Though there is no need to escape these amazing cities for the weekend, for those who need a break there are a multitude of great travel destinations at each city's doorstep. In New York most flee to the Hamptons where owning a vacation house is the sine qua non of "making it." Whereas those from San Francisco will make a weekend getaway to Napa for some wine tasting or further north to Lake Tahoe for some skiing. Each city has great escapes for those who need a little more nature in their lives.
