Festival Beginnings
In 1981, legendary film star Robert Redford called upon his friends and fellow actors to foster an environment for creative and independent movie-making in the mountains of Utah. Ten emerging filmmakers were then invited to work with established writers and directors at the first Sundance Institute Filmmakers/Directors Lab.

Respected film critic Roger Ebert was one of the first to generate major media coverage for the event and was a huge supporter of Sundance through the decades.
