Weegee, "Naked City"

Weegee, Naked City
Born Usher Fellig in 1899, Fellig earned the nickname Weegee (sounds like “Ouija") for his bizarre ability to premeditate crime—he was always the first reporter at the scene to photograph the mayhem. Prominent in Hollywood, Weegee took still shots for Dr. Strangelove, and his photography book, The Naked City, would later inspired an Oscar-nominated film of the same name. The 140 prints on display at the Steven Kasher Gallery are set primarily in the Lower East Side of 1930s and 40s New York, exploring murder, love, sex, celebrity, class, the circus, and much more.  And yes, that photo on the left is of a transvestite in a paddy wagon. Through February 25 at the Steven Kasher Gallery, 521 W. 23rd Street. Opening reception this Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information, go HERE. [Photo via]
