Do less Oscar bait movies
Matthew McConaughey came out of left field and won an Oscar, but he actually spent years leading up to Dallas Buyers Club doing movies that were less Oscar bait and were more festival friendly. He actually came forward and said Mud was his favorite experience and what he was most proud of, not Dallas Buyers Club. I mean, how much fun can you have while whittling yourself down to the waistline of an 8 year old boy? Independent movies, movies that are lowkey but do well at Sundance or Cannes, or even something surprising like Wes Anderson or Judd Apatow is actually a refreshing career move.
