The Arbalest
Tales of toys and obsession, our favorite! Writer-director Adam Pinney's The Arbalest took home top honors from the SXSW grand jury, but there's been some disagreement for why. Spotlighting the life of Foster Kalt, a reclusive toy inventor responsible for a Rubik's cube-like puzzle, the film spirals around his infatuation with a woman named Sylvia, following a disconnected narrative that left some critics more confused than impressed. With its slightly Wes Anderson-y shots and admittedly unique angle (and degree of strange, dry humor), The Arbalest nevertheless got audiences buzzing.
