After his relationship with Brigitte Bardot and her marriage to composer John Barry, Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin began their 12-year love affair on a film-set in 1968. Known throughout France for his music which grew in popularity when it was covered by Francoise Hardy and Dionne Warwick, Gainsbourg and Birkin made a fashionable match. Hermes designed the first 'Birkin' bag on Jane's behalf in 1984. Together they recorded the song Je T'aime...Moi non plus, which was too hot for the Vatican. Gainsbourg called the Pope his "greatest PR man."
