Louis Gossett, Jr., Best Supporting Actor, An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)
In 1982, Louis Gossett, Jr. took home a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role of drill instructor Emil Foley in
An Officer and a Gentleman. The film tells the story of an undisciplined navy aviation officer candidate (played by
Richard Gere) whom Gossett whips into shape.
Gossett’s Oscar win ended a nineteen-year drought of black awardees post-Poitier, who, coincidentally, was Gossett’s costar in the 1961 film version of
A Raisin in the Sun.
