Ask Natty: How Do I Pull Off Colored Jeans This Spring?

by Natalie Decleve · March 15, 2012

    Dear Natty –

I love the trend of wearing colored jeans, but I’m scared that I won’t be able to pull it off. Do you have any tips on how to wear them well?

    Dear Shy –

Colored jeans are a great way to spice up your wardrobe. But after years of seeing only variations of blue, grey, black and white in our denim trends – rocking shades like coral, and lavender on our legs can be daunting. The good news is: they’re way more versatile than you think.

See below for 4 fun ways to wear this season’s hot pants. Then go get yourself a pair, blast some James Brown on your iPod, and wear with confidence.

    NEUTRAL TERRITORY

Don’t think that “neutral” can only mean black or white. Try a soft shade of grey, taupe or nude to offset the shocking shade of denim. This works especially well with washed out neon’s like coral, yellow or green.

    HEAD-TO-TOE

Choose a top in a similar hue to the jeans for maximum impact. Monochromatic styling is sophisticated and almost gives you an “aura” in your color of choice. Just be sure that the top and bottom are a few shades off to give you a contrast. A print is another great way to break it up while keeping the effect.

    REVERSE DENIM

Remember that denim shirt that we all bought about a year ago? Well now that wardrobe staple acts as the perfect topper to this season’s bright jeans. Think less “redneck tuxedo” and more “reverse denim.”

    THE BRIGHTER THE BETTER

Color blocking was a huge trend on the runways for spring, and dyed denim makes it easy to wear this look for everyday. Choose a top in a contrasting, solid shade for a look that pops. You can even add to the fun with a blazer or shoe in another bright hue. Just don’t try to wear more than 3 colors at a time, or you risk resembling a Rubiks Cube.
