Eilis Ni Dhuibne's The Dancers Dancing is set in the summer of 1972 in Ireland's "Gaeltacht" (the rural western areas of the country where Irish was the predominant language). The novel chronicles the experiences of 13 year-old Dubliner Orla Crilly, who joins students from all over Ireland in "Irish college" to live with local families and improve their Irish. At Irish college, rich, poor, Northern, Republican, country and city kids intermingle and become friends. This barrier-breaking environment allows Orla to learn about The Troubles from the Northern Irish girls, fall in love for the first time, and come face-to-face with her family's humble, rural beginnings.
