Anna Meares, Australia
During the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, sprint cyclist Anna Meares set a new world record in the Women's 500 meter, and took home the gold medal. In 2008, Meares was involved in a severe cycling crash that left her with a broken neck. Miraculously, she fought back from the injury and was able to qualify for the 2008 games in Beijing. Unfortunately, Meares lost in a final ride-off and had to settle for a silver medal, still quite impressive considering her injury. Since then, Meares has returned to her form as an elite cyclist and was named Australian Institute of Sport Athlete of the Year for the third time in 2011. Can she regain gold in London?
