Competitors lined up for a costume judging contest, followed by the surfing heats, where they were strongly encouraged to remain in character. On a related note, I think this year's prize for most overdone costume this year goes to the Black Swan in a landslide. On paper, it's both distinctive and relatively easy to pull off, but given that the movie came out almost a full year ago, it feels like it fell into that space where it's no longer topical, but not old enough to be classic. Add that to the fact that there were at least two Black Swans at every party we were at, and the whole thing just kind of didn't work. Now, if someone had rocked it as a lesbian couples costume with her Mila Kunis lookalike girlfriend in tow? Different story.
