Highlight: Goodie Mob's MCA Tribute
Is it a problem that most of the best moments in this show came from tributes to dead people that are infinitely bigger icons than the people giving tribute to them? Maybe, but that's a pretty bleak way to look at it, don't you think? Besides, we can be happy for criminally under-recognized Atlanta hip hop group Goodie Mob, who have made nice with breakout member Cee-Lo in order to reunite and release a new (upcoming) album. After a crowd-pleasing performance of their new single "Fight To Win" (featuring a pretty amazing dance performance from an amputee in military uniform), Cee-Lo extolled the crowd to "get your ass up and celebrate the life of MCA," and Goodie Mob busted out with a energetic rendition of "Fight For Your Right To Party," which brought the house down. Carrie Underwood and others were filmed singing along with every word, the Beastie Boys logo loomed huge on stage alongside a picture of MCA, Cee-Lo smashed a (we're guessing breakaway) bottle over his head, and it struck me, in some ways for the first time, that we would never see Adam Yauch on stage again.
