Yes, of course they're a band that does musical comedy (it's kind of hard to deny that when one is looking at a picture of a 25-foot tall phallic "Fenix" on stage), but at their best, Tenacious D has the musical chops to be enjoyed entirely without irony. It doesn't hurt that their backup band for both touring and studio work has included real deal rockers like Dave Grohl, Warren Fitzgerald of The Vandals, and John Konesky and John Spiker from Trainwreck.
