In 1955, Hefner published a short story called "The Crooked Man," by Charles Beaumont, a sci-fi tale in which homosexuality was the norm, and heterosexuals were shunned by society - after other magazines refused to. In response to all the angry letters Playboy then received, he defended the piece, and its greater idea, saying "If it was wrong to persecute heterosexuals in a homosexual society, then the reverse was wrong too."
