On Saturday while over 60,000 marched in the May Day protest of Arizona's new immigration law downtown, another demonstration was taking place not too far away. You may never have heard of it but Pasadena's annual Doo-Dah Parade draws thousands of people to celebrate and show off the weird, eccentric, and bizarre.
This is not a gathering of your garden variety eccentrics, though. It brings out the real kooks, the ones who count down the days until they can revel in their exceptional strangeness. And this year these people went all out... Shit got weird. There were clowns on stilts, psychedelic Grecian fairies, cross-dressers, cross-dressers on unicycles, Marie Antoinettes, dancing zombies and marijuana superheros. The folks in Zebra print Snuggies seem totally normal in comparison to Doo-Dah's assortment of freaks. It was quite literally a freak show, but to an even greater degree since it was a parade of thousands, so more like a festival of freaks. Freak Fest 2010. And god love 'em for participating in an event in which they feel free enough to express their weirdness, but wow... just, wow. Most of this is stuff you really need to see to appreciate and thankfully, LA Weekly was there to document the wackness.
UPDATE: We now have a video from Ray Schiel with footage from the Doo-Dah Parade. Enjoy:
