Silversun Pickups at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium
If the Silversun Pickups had been around about 10 years earlier, I have no doubt in my mind that they could have absolutely rode the post-grunge wave to super-stardom. But that might be doing them (and the very respectable success they've already achieved) a disservice; as much as their overdubbed guitars, uptempo drums, and Brian Aubert's signature sneering vocals sound like they warped in straight from a Siamese Dream outtake session, the Pickups seem to be succeeding where the Pumpkins never could by steadily ramping up the level of their studio production without ever succumbing to overreach or self-parody; their new album Neck Of The Woods thankfully features no extended piano solos, meandering ambient noise-slush or most of the other nonsense that turned Billy Corgan into a walking punchline. Also of note: the Pickups recently joined the long list of bands to issue a cease and desist to a Republican candidate for using their music at campaign rallies without permission, as Mitt Romney had somehow been using their tune "Panic Switch." We're not sure how this concert calendar turned out so political, so, um, sorry about that? [Details & Ticket Info] [via]
