Disney+ may have all the cartoon princess content, but Netflix just snagged the real-life royals. The streaming service that does, after all, produce the series The Crown, about the Windsors, has just struck a multiyear deal with none other than Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Six months after relinquishing their official duties as members of the British royal family, the couple, who have recently resettled in L.A., are already sowing the seeds of Hollywood stardom. The Duke and Duchess have founded a production company and have officially signed on with Netflix to create a range of content, from documentaries and feature films to scripted shows and children’s programming. They've already got an animated series about inspiring women in the works.
While the pair may make some appearances on screen, former actress Markle has confirmed that she has no desire to return to her old career.
“Our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope,” the couple said in a statement, according to the New York Times. “As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us.” They added that Netflix’s “unprecedented reach will help us share impactful content that unlocks action.”
Harry and Meghan had also met with Disney, Apple, and NBCUniversal. At one point, a source told the Times, they were "seeking a deal in the neighborhood of $100 million." That would certainly take care of any money concerns they've faced since leaving the palace.
As it happens, they are in the company of another influential couple that made waves by signing a production deal with Netflix: Barack and Michelle Obama. Fingers crossed for some double date watch parties on the horizon.
