Skinny Donut Lovers At L.A.'s Donut Summit

You might assume the type of people who would come together on a Sunday to celebrate a deep-fried dessert and key ingredient of concoctions featured on the now defunct ThisIsWhyYoureFat.com would be, well, fat.  But the crowd of donut (doughnut?) enthusiasts who came far and wide yesterday for the first ever L.A. Donut Summit was surprisingly trim, gangly even.

The event, held at Griffith Park, was filled with games and, of course, donut tasting.  To most of us, a day revolving around a cheap, pedestrian dessert generally reserved for office meetings and up for grabs on Fridays at car dealerships would seem like a lighthearted joke.  But believe these were serious matters for folks who came out, complete with a formal Donut Registration, Donut Marshals (you know, because someone needs to be there to cut the treats for sharing), a vote, and a high honor of crowning Donut King.

The donut-lovers voted on the day's best and worst, resulting in the following: BEST YEAST-RAISED DONUT: (a four-way tie) Moon Donuts, Redondo Beach; Frygirl; Huckleberry Donuts, Santa Monica; Spudnuts, Mar Vista/Canoga Park

BEST CAKE DONUT: Tasty Donuts, West Hollywood

BEST DONUT FILLING: Donut Man, Glendora

BEST FRITTER: Randy’s, Westchester

BEST FROSTING OR GLAZE: (yet another four-way tie!) Moon Donuts, Redondo Beach; Bob’s Donuts, 3rd and Fairfax; Donut Man, Glendora; Granny’s Donuts, San Pedro

BEST CHOCOLATE DONUT: DK’s Donuts, Santa Monica

BEST HERTZ DONUT: Our very own Robnoxious

MOST VISUALLY APPEALING DONUT: Frygirl

MOST UNCONVENTIONAL DONUT: Frygirl

ROUNDEST DONUT: Spudnuts, Mar Vista/Canoga Park

BEST VEGAN DONUT: Babycakes

WORST OVERALL DONUT: Dubious Donuts, Culver City? (these donuts were of mysterious origin, possibly homemade?)

BEST OVERALL DONUT and DONUT KING: The Donut Man!
