History

The Colony has lived up to the hype since its opening in 1947. The hotel was most famous for its glamorous Colonial-style design and intimate club-like atmosphere, becoming the it-destination on Palm Beach for international jet-setters, Hollywood stars, and even royalty.

In 1959, S. Joseph Tankoos, Jr., the financier behind New York’s Delmonico Hotel, purchased the lease and told the Miami Herald at the time that he "hoped to recapture that graciousness along with the gaiety and the push-button service provided by such hotels as the Claridge in London or the Plaza Athénée in Paris."

It certainly seems like he's succeeded.
