I, YOU, WE At The Whitney

I, YOU, WE At The Whitney
These three powerful pronouns provide the framework for an exhibition reassessing the Whitney's permanent collection. Showcasing works from throughout the tumultuous 1980s and early '90s, I, YOU, WE addresses the political discontent, economic division, and health crisis of the era and how it affected the art world. The show is divided into four sections which break down the artists' methods of interpreting themselves, their communities, and society as a whole: the "I" gallery, devoted to pieces of personal identity; the "YOU" section, exploring the relationship between artists and their subjects; the "WE" area, dedicated to the criticism of contemporary American society; and finally an AIDS gallery, featuring pieces which capture the reactions and effects of the then-burgeoning disease. When: Through September 1 Where: Whitney Museum of Art, 945 Madison Avenue [Photo via]
