Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
If you’re in the mood to feel depressed as hell this month, I highly recommend Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. A former book club selection of mine, it covers the lineage story of two half sisters who have each lived very different lives in eighteenth-century Ghana. One sister is sold into slavery, the other marries a rich white slave trader who lives in a castle. Each chapter unveils the story of the next of kin from both women, up until modern day. Though there is a zero percent chance you won’t be in your feelings after/while reading this, it’s a beautifully written story that is hard to believe is a debut novel.
