Grace Jones
Address: Penthouse near Union Square
Singer, actress, model, and androgynous style icon of the late 1970s and '80s, Grace Jones has lived in Jamaica, New York, Paris, and London. But it was in Manhattan that her career really took off in the late '70s. She used to frequent nightclubs like Studio 54 with Andy Warhol. In 1979, she had her own midtown apartment but spent most of her time living with (then) boyfriend artist Jean-Paul Goude in his $1,000/month loft penthouse near Union Square. Imagine those prices today! Jones and Goude were actually held up and threatened at gun point in the penthouse apartment, and were forced to hand over whatever cash they had, according to Jet Magazine.
