The Elder Statesman's Start
In an interview with
The Business of Fashion, Chait explains that his knitwear brand, The Elder Statesman, started with a need for a heavy blanket.
“About 10 years ago I was given a really beautiful cashmere blanket. I then started collecting blankets from France, Italy, Scotland, even Ethiopia, and I wound up with a great collection, but I could never find the one that I really wanted for myself. It had to be utilitarian as well as the ultimate in terms of luxury, so I found a collective in Canada doing hand-spun wool and they were working a little bit with cashmere and I asked them, ‘can you create a really heavy gauged yarn for me?"

The Canadian collective said yes. He then took that yarn and had it knitted into blankets which ended up weighing 10 lbs each. Thrilled with the results, he took his Ksubi money and began his brand, The Elder Statesman. He went on to sell these blankets in high end stores around the country, ranging from $2,000 all the way up to $21,000.
