Daily Style Phile: Blake Lively

by Ross Kenneth Urken · March 4, 2011

Blake Lively allegedly said recently it's "tacky" to attend a Chanel runway show as a celeb, but Wednesday night the brand threw a dinner in her honor at La Grenouille-essentially bowing at her fashion alter. She's emerged as the muse of Christian Louboutin and the toast of Chanel. Let's see how she got there.

Even before she became Gossip Girl's Serena van der Woodsen, she was born into a privileged family.

The actor had been friends with Lively since childhood. He's noted for making his acting debut in The Oakley Seven and appeared in Simon Says and Prom Night (2008).

The actor was Lively's childhood classmate and is best known for his role as Dan Humphrey on Gossip Girl. He has starred in the movies John Tucker Must Die, The Stepfather, and Easy A. Though they tried to keep their relationship under wraps, when people magazine published photos in May 2008 of the two kissing in Mexico, they opened up.

    The Fashion Rise:

    Christian Louboutin Muse

The Huffington Post notes the origin:

"Blake Lively has solidified her fashionista status after meeting Christian Louboutin in Paris, riding around together on a Vespa and having a shoe named after her. She told Regis & Kelly, 'I went to [Louboutin's] atelier and I was walking around, like every shoe here is so beautiful and I saw this one pair and I said, 'I've never seen anything like it.' Louboutin then offered to call it 'Blake' in her honor."

At the 24th Annual FN Achievement Awards at MoMA in December, Lively told GofG her thoughts on being Louboutin's muse and how that makes her feel like a "modern day Cinderella."

Then there was the time she bought 40 pairs of Louboutins in Nov. 2010, as People noted...

"Footwear News spotted Blake Lively scooping up more than 40 pairs of the designer shoes at the invite-only Christian Louboutin sample sale in N.Y.C...And while we're not mathematicians, with flats starting at $150 and heels at $225--and factoring in Lively's propensity for dangerously high footwear--we're estimating a final tally of upwards of $9K."

She has not relented on her Louboutin obsession.

"Blake Lively does a little shopping after filming scenes for Gossip Girl on Tuesday (January 25) in New York City. The 23-year-old actress shot a scene with her on-screen mom, Kelly Rutherford, at pasticceria and confetteria Sant Ambroeus before heading to the Christian Louboutin boutique."

    Chanel: Scandal And Resurgence

Anna Wintour introduced Lagerfeld to Lively, and they had dinner before the Chanel couture show last July.

Lagerfeld appointed her "official ambassador" of the label's new Mademoiselle handbag, describing her as "a kind of American dream girl."

    A Riff In Paradise?

But during Paris Fashion Week at the end of February, a rumor began to circulate that Lively had dismissed attending the Chanel show as tacky, according to Fashionista.

"Here's a rumor that makes absolutely no sense but a credible source swears it's true: Blake Lively is allegedly refusing to attend Chanel, even though she's the face of the brand, because, our source says, 'she thinks it's tacky for a celebrity like herself to attend the show.' Instead she's planning to host a dinner during Paris Fashion Week to give press the opportunity to chat with the face of Chanel's new Mademoiselle handbag line."

But all was cleared up when Chanel toasted Lively at La Grenouille as an "ambassadress" of the brand. She wore all Chanel and carried the spring 2011 Bowling Bag in white caviar leather. Attendees included Hope Atherton, Justin Long, Bonnie Morrison, Andre Balazs, Hannah Bronfman, Kathryn Neale, Andrew Bevan, Waris Ahluwalia, Stella Schnabel, Anabelle Dexter-Jones, Allison Sarofim, and Tory Burch.
