Daily Style Phile: Donald Glover

by Ross Kenneth Urken · February 28, 2011

Donald Glover, the writer, comedian, actor, and rapper has been seeing his career mount in momentum as he prepares for his spring IAMDONALD tour. He caused quite the stir at Fashion Week making public his offer to sleep with Anna Wintour. But his shenanigans won't end there.

His live show, IAMDONALD is going on tour this spring and will appear at the Bowery Ballroom on May 10th and the Music Hall of Williamsburg on May 14th. Here's what you need to know.

As his press release puts it:

"IAMDONALD is an interactive experience that uses live music, comedy, and video to convey the personal experience of being me, Donald Glover. Everyone who comes to the show will leave the show my best friend. IAMDONALD is about not letting people define you. A lot of my fans tweet or email me saying how they like that I do a lot of things and are held back by people saying 'You're a writer. Why are you acting?' or 'You can't rap about the show Rugrats.' I say 'F**k that. That's pretty much the show.""

    THE ANNA DIARIES:

    On Anna Wintour and Flatulence:

When he sat in the front row at the Band of Outsiders runway show next to Anna Wintour and Tavi Gevinson, he told the Post:

"Talk to them? I tried to disappear! I just kept thinking to myself, 'Don't fart! Don't fart! Please don't fart."

When male models dropped from the ceiling on harnesses, apparently Wintour said to him, "Hmm. Spider-Man."

On Anna Wintour And The Phone

When Anna Wintour left her phone on his seat, he told New York Mag:

"I've seen The September Issue. I watched The Devil Wears Prada...I wasn't going to ask Wintour to move her phone!"

On Anna Wintour And A Tryst:

"As minutes ticked by, Glover began to do what many of us enduring an awkward moment might have done: He began to Tweet, using the hash tag '#thingsItriednottodoinfrontofAnnaWintour'. His followers tweeted back, suggesting other things that would be terrible to do in front of Anna Wintour, such as quote The Devil Wears Prada. They also asked if she could 'get it.' 'I have this thing on my Twitter called #cangetit,' Glover explained. 'Which is girls I think can get it. Like, if they wanted to have sex with me, they could at any point. So I got a lot of Tweets like, 'Can Anna Wintour get it?' And she totally can.' He imagined what she might say in bed: 'This sex is derivative of your fall-collection sex. Try something new, and don't be so afraid to bite things...Look if Anna Wintour wants to have sex with me, she totally can...It can't hurt to put that out there."

    Other Quips:

As Paper Mag reported, Donald Glover at the Band of Outsiders show during fashion week told Andrew Andrew they looked "like the heirs to the Willy Wonka fortune."

    Unsuccessful Campaigns:

There were movements to get him to play Peter Parker in the upcoming Spider-Man movie and also to portray Barack Obama on Saturday Night Live. Alas.

He will take New York by storm this spring, and in the meantime, this is your cheat sheet.
