Daily Style Phile: The Many Sides Of Brooklyn Darling Sophie Auster

by Anna Lombardi · May 12, 2011

Brooklyn native Sophie Auster is the daughter of author/film director Paul Auster and author Siri Hustvedt. At the ripe young age of 23 Sophie has an album, movies and a college education under her belt.  Sophie is clearly not one to shy away from a camera, and when caught in front of a lens her fashion sense is just as fresh and inspiring as her budding career!

    Career

Sophie recorded her first album at just sixteen years old, taking English translations of French poems her father had written as a young man (the album also includes a few original lyrics she had written).

Sophie has been acting in films since 1998 when she played Sonia Kleinman in Lulu On The Bridge.

In 2007 Sophie played the role of Anna James in The inner Life Of Martin Frost (directed by her father).

More recent film work includes  The imperialists are still alive! and the circuit (both were filmed in 2010).

Last summer Sophie filmed the leading role in Stealing Summers along side Mick Jaggers son James Jagger. The film, that was directed by David Martin Porras will be using Sophie's original song "lonely with him, lonely without him" in the end credits.

Where you may know her from

In 2006 Sophie graced the cover of Spanish Rolling Stone magazine.

Also in 2006 PAPER Mag listed Auster as one of their most beautiful people.

Sophie has been featured in French Elle, GQ and Nylon magazine.

In 2010, Sophie joined Scarlet Johansson and Dree Hemingway for the Mango spring ad campaign and catalog. She tells NYLON:

The photos you posed for in Mango’s catalogue are super rock’n’roll. How do they compare to what you normally wear onstage with your band? I think it’s kind of evolving. The more I perform, the more I’ll experiment with what I wear. Usually it’s a T-shirt, leather jacket, jeans, and boots.  Sometimes I’ll try and go a little more exciting and wear a dress. The clothing for the Mango shoot had a retro vibe, which was very cool. [via]

What is up next for Miss Auster

With her college degree from Sarah Lawrence behind her Sophie is pouring her heart and soul into her next album, and is continuing her passion for acting.

“I force myself to write everyday, but the best songs are the ones that pour out you—the ones that are urgent.” [via]

Auster will be playing at the Montauk Music Festival this upcoming weekend, and is continually adding performances to her website .
