On Saturday, February 25, the New York Junior League hosted its 71st annual Winter Ball at Cipriani South Street. The black-tie affair attracted 800 guests and raised more than $600,000 in support of the organization's training and community programs. It also honored recipients of the New York Junior League's Outstanding Sustainer and Outstanding Volunteer Awards, the organization's highest honor. Barbara Etzel and Marion S. Hedges were honored as Outstanding Sustainers and Blythe Winchester Brock, Marie T. Finan, Andrea Theresa McDermott, Christina Bott Murphy, and Contessa Officer received recognition as Outstanding Volunteers.

The New York Junior League has a deep connection to New York City, having been established in 1901 by Barnard College student Mary Harriman (a daughter of railroad magnate E.H. Harriman and sister of the 48th governor of New York, W. Averell Harriman). Along with nine of her friends, Harriman formed the group to unite women around the purpose of contributing to their community. With more than 2,300 women volunteers, the organization carries on that mission today through its work with more than 60 community-based organizations.
