With a name like Creative Time, the public arts organization could hardly be expected to throw a boring party. And year after year, they never fail to impress. Held at City Point Brooklyn, which is essentially a shopping center, the 2017 gala transformed the space into a veritable wonderland of ice sculptures, innovative Bombay Sapphire cocktails, and of course, the specially commissioned art. "Fear Eats The Soul," said one flag in the Pledges of Allegiance exhibition series, while another, created by Marilyn Minter, simply read "RESIST." They hung high above the heads of glittering guests in the dining room, including Chloe Sevigny, Mia Moretti, Stefano Tonchi, Abbi Jacobson, and Ilana Glazer, who were all in attendance to help honor Opening Ceremony masterminds Humberto Leon and Carol Lim.
The Pledges of Allegiance project takes the concept and symbolism of flags, which represent unity and shared identity, and turns them on their heads. "As the world turns inward, we need artists to give shape to a dream that inspires and mobilizes us,” said Creative Time Artistic Director Nato Thompson. And with participating artists including Minter, Alex Da Corte, and Yoko Ono, inspiration could certainly be felt in abundance.
