A voice-activated disco ball, massive plates of peppers, and Solange Knowles. All were present last night at the New York launch of #MadeByGoogle, celebrating home tech by the internet juggernaut. Hosting simultaneous events on both coasts, Google most likely took over your Instagram story feed, with a DJ set by Heron Preston and performance by Solange in NYC, and a Jaden Smith-led bash in L.A.
On the East Coast, everyone who's anyone in creative media was sipping on fresh coconuts and checking out their exclusive new Pixel phones ahead of the intimate show. Artists Chloe Wise and Dustin Yellin, musician Young Paris, designers Rosie Assoulin and Aurora James, and fashion It Chicks Hari Nef, Nausheen Shah, and Leigh Lezark partied in the digital wonderland, where all of our senses were satisfied - mostly due to giant blocks of spicy chocolate and virtual reality headsets.
The moment Solange finally took to the stage, cheers quickly went hush as guests realized they were in for something moving. All decked out in red, Solange, her band, and back-up singers, danced, swayed, and gave pure soul during her otherworldly hymns and more danceable beats. At one point the singer even jumped into the small crowd to quite literally rub elbows with attendees. There's only one word to describe it: magical.
The Made By Google pop-up will be open at 110 Fifth Avenue through December 31st.
