In the age of influencers getting paid to swoon over new collections, some designers may have forgotten that when it comes to legit fashion journalism, not everyone is going to be impressed. Writing honest and critical reviews, is, after all, part of the job.
But when Fashionista's Alexandra Mondalek shared her candid take on Philipp Plein's Fall 2019 presentation (which she was indeed sent there to do), the designer handled it less-than professionally. Whether he couldn't handle the criticism or was lashing out because of the controversy surrounding his show (namely, a fake Kanye West scam which saw him getting bamboozled out of $900,000), Plein launched a personal attack on the writer herself.
"While everyone invited was under the impression it was a seated dinner, there was seating for, at most, two-thirds of the guests," Mondalek wrote of the experience at The Grill, where the show was held. As for the clothes themselves, the seasoned fashion reviewer found them to be a "regurgitated tasting of other designers' hits from recent seasons past." Harsh, perhaps, but not off-base.
In response to the negative write-up, Plein, offended that a journalist would dare to report what actually went down, dug up old photos of Mondalek and posted them to his Instagram stories (and over one million followers) to dive into a fat-shaming tirade. "Next time I make sure that you will get enough food! I promise..." he wrote next to a photo of the writer. In another Insta story, he confused her for Amanda Bynes and said, "Next time you want a free meal babe show up on time at the show..."
Today, Mondalek wrote about the experience (and Plein's disgusting behavior) in an article for InStyle.
If anyone's body is to be commented on, it should be Plein's, who clearly needs to grow thicker skin.
