My friend Malcolm Harris is one of the most talented men I know.  Not only is he a well known designer of the line Mal Sirrah, Inc. and member of "Designer's for Dafur", he is a modern Renaissance man, connecting people and spreading his contagious energy throughout our city.  Case in point: his Fashion for Food event tonight.  I sat down with him for dinner at Raoul's last night and was blown away with what Malcom told me he had accomplished in just two weeks.  Because of his work, the NY food bank, in a time where there is a considerable less amount to be given away to charities, received the biggest grant since 9/11 from Robin Hood, the foundation who focuses on poverty issues, and which, at their annual black tie gala this year raised more than (I was there and was in shock with how quickly this process happened during a live auction that I will never forget).

Malcolm, you are truly an angel this season for so many New Yorkers in need of food.  You are the modern day Santa Claus and we are all so proud of your work.

When fashion designer, Malcolm Harris, organizer of "Fashion For Food" event approached Alden James (director) and Stacy Engman (curator) less than a week before their Thursday, December 18th, 2008 "Pop-Up Charity" event regarding hosting the soiree within their hallowed-halls, no one on the board of The National Arts Club even flinched. They just simply asked "How can we help to make this event a complete success."

One would think an old New York establishment such as The National Arts Club would find this new-fangled "Pop-Up" approach to charity events a bit daunting. But on the contrary… Most of the major players within the organization were already ahead of the trend and had been looking for a way to provide an impromptu event that would give back to the City of New York during this very difficult holiday season.

As most New Yorkers may be aware, this season finds our local food banks and soup kitchens more strapped for funding and food donations than any other time in modern history. Therefore, instead of taking months to plan a big huge event volunteers of the new not-for-profit “PopUpCharity.ORG” (a group of artists, designers, musicians and entrepreneurs) decided to pitch-in and organize Thursday evening’s “Fashion for Food” event to draw attention to the plight of the food banks as well as to raise a bit of funds to assist them in keeping their doors open through this tough holiday season.

Thursday evening’s event is expected to be attended by the likes of real life Victoria Secret's angels Noemi Lenoir and Selita Ebanks as well as foodie Padma Lakshmi. There are still a limited number of tickets available online at www.popupcharity.ticketleap.com.

Organizers of the "Fashion For Food" event are hoping that New Yorkers will use the generosity and kindness of The National Arts Club as a role model and find it in their hearts to also lend their support to the Food Bank For New York City during this holiday of hope.
