The necklace that launched a thousand DMs. Our own included.
If you didn't spot that fortunate fashionable flock of Renata Zandonadi Quaglia's friends last summer all sunning about by the sea, sporting her beautiful crocheted shell necklaces, you seriously need to overhaul who you're following on Instagram.
Given as tokens of friendship, the handcrafted necklaces quickly saw the model flooded with requests to sell the special pieces. Less than a year later and her new brand RENATA.Q's Moda Operandi trunk show sale completely sold out in less than 2 days (don't worry - she's since brought a few styles back for preorder).
Ahead of what's sure to be a shell-filled stylish season, you'll already find plenty of people in Montauk with Renata's designs tied round their necks, we caught up with the designer to chat her exciting new venture, favorite summertime destinations and more....
When did you first learn to crochet?
My maternal grandmother, Ercy, taught me to crochet when I was just six years old. She's 93 now, and in great shape - truly the most charismatic blond blue-eyed woman. She lives in Southern Brazil, and still crochest every day. Crochet is a hobby that runs in the family!
How did you think to start crafting up jewelry?
RENATA.Q’s origin story is very organic. I was vacationing with friends in Formentera last summer - my husband and I love going on long swims and walks on the beach. I started picking shells, framing them and wearing them to dinner. As someone who loves doing things with my hands, it felt natural, and was far from a business concept at first. Coincidentally, my friends immediately started noticing the pieces I was wearing, asking if they too could have one. Here we are a year later, and I am so thankful for the support along the way and proud of what the brand has become.
What's the process for sourcing your shells?
I partner with an amazing organization that sources shells as responsibly and sustainably as possible, minimizing impact to the environment. Clearly, they are a finite resource, and therefore precious - I look forward to evolving the brand with this in mind.
Who are some of the chicest people you've had sport your designs so far?
Lauren Santo Domingo, Giovanna Engelbert, Leandra Medine, Fabiola Beracasa, Bruna Tenorio, Isabella Massenet, Ruth Wilson, Brianna Lance.
Is there anyone you'd most love to see in one of your pieces?
Amal Clooney, without a doubt. Her undying support for human rights, and the plight of women is admirable. It is a cause close to my heart.
By partnering with marginalized women and teaching them a craft from which they are able to support themselves, I hope to build a platform to make a real difference.
How has your career as a model helped you as you start your business?
By exposing myself to the unknown at an early age, the early days of my modeling career taught me to be curious. I was given a way to travel the world, learn new languages, and interact with top creatives in the fashion industry. Spending time around these people helped me develop a discerning eye for aesthetics, knowledge/appreciation for craftsmanship, as well as an idea of how to run a business.
What are your favorite destinations to visit this time of year?
Ibiza/Formentera, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Crans-Montana.
Any popular travel spots that you find overrated?
Anywhere popular in Europe in August. I’d much rather escape to the mountains in Switzerland, hike all day, and breathe fresh air.
Must-hit places for enjoying summer in the city?
Battery Park picnics are a must. Rooftop barbecues and long, late night walks along the river by the West Side Highway. Sant Ambroeus SoHo outside, Bar Pisellino, and Figo il Gelato will always be favorites of mine.
