Forget Gossip Girl and Cinco de Mayo, last night, our city was the host of superheroes from near and far to walk the ultimate red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum's Annual Costume Institute Gala. This event, is by far the most anticipated, and watched red carpet of the year. Anyone in the fashion industry will confirm that this blows the skirt off the Oscars as far as red carpet voyeurism goes. The theme this year was "Superheroes" and the A-listers kindly obliged in presenting to us a radiant display of superhuman fashion. My favorite dressed (and there were so so many amazing gowns, some that I have recently seen on runways like Marchesa two weeks ago), was Christina Ricci. Surprising I know, but I am in LOVE with this Givenchy number (above). Talk about a transformation of super-human proportions! She looks amazing!

The event was hosted by Giorgio Armani with George Clooney and Julia Roberts serving as the co-chairs. Other guests included:

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Kate Moss (who wore white, and arrived hand-in-hand with Stella McCartney), Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (in custom-made Diane Von Furstenberg), Thandie Newton (who plumped for a daring next season Chanel mini), Beyonce, David and Victoria Beckham, Claudia Schiffer, Jennifer Connelly (looking relatively minimalist in monochrome Balenciaga), David Bowie and Iman (wearing his 'n hers Dolce and Gabbana), Christina Ricci, Naomi Watts, John Mayer and Gisele Bundchen and Scarlett Johansson to the Met's great hall - which had been outfitted for the occasion with larger-than-larger than life Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman statues. I heart Anna Wintour after she showed us last night that even she can loosen up a bit and get into the theme (more than anyone else there she followed suit). Her superhero gown was designed especially for her by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. Thank god we have such well dressed superheros to save us in any kind of real disaster we should face....fashion disaster that is.
