If there's anything you should have learned this past year, it's that pajamas are truly the unsung heroes of your wardrobe. Sure your shoe collection may be museum-worthy, and your statement coat game may be insane, but if you're sporting the same pair of sweatpants every night - well, let's be real, every morning, noon and night! - sitting on the couch, you've seriously lost your sartorial way.
Lucky for you sister act Sarah Kate Price and Anna Price Connolly will have you claiming your rightful place as The Life of the Pajama Party with their newly launched, already cult-favorite brand West of Breakfast. Their ethos? Comfort is key, minimalism is a bore, and pajamas are so not just for around the house!
How did you guys come about the idea for West of Breakfast?
SKP: Our mom has always joked that when we were little, we divided the world. We're only 13 months apart, but we've always been opposites in so many ways. One of the things we do share, though, is a lifelong love of pajamas. We both live in them, and weirdly found ourselves talking about them a lot! But Anna comes at it more from the comfort angle and I'm all about the style and being able to wear them as clothing. We figured, if we could make a pajama set that was comfortable enough for Anna, and stylish enough for me, we'd have the perfect set and really be on to something. So that's exactly what we did.
It was kind of funny, actually. We threw all of our favorite pajamas on the bed and talked through what we liked and what we wished was different and frankensteined together the fit and features that we wanted. We wanted them to feel functional but playful, and high-quality but more accessible than some of the $500 pajama sets you see out there.
As sisters, who's the Mary-Kate and who's the Ashley?
Anna: EASY. Sarah is Mary-Kate and I'm Ashley. We would play "Mary-Kate and Ashley" when we were little and without question, that's always who we were. I'm just like Ashley, always a little more girly, and Mary-Kate is sportier, just like Sarah. If there's ever an opening to be an Olsen twin, we would both throw our hats in the ring.
Five things every well appointed pajama party needs?
In addition to fabulous pajamas...
Anna: 1. Your favorite people. Nuff said.
2. Good treats. We're both partial to ice cream and Sarah always makes a cheeseboard for every get together. Without fail.
SKP: 3. A playful bout of dress-up. It was our favorite game as kids and it's still our favorite game now. Never does anybody ever leave a party of mine without trying on at least one outrageous accessory from my closet.
4. A killer soundtrack. We like throwing in some nostalgic favorites and some unexpected tracks. It's good to keep people on their toes.
5. Feather shoes. They just make everything more fun. Between the two of us we have more pairs than we'd care to admit...
Who's your boudoir style icon?
Anna: Jennifer Garner in 13 Going on 30. You know that part where she's singing to Pat Benatar with all the actual 13 years olds? Iconic.
SKP: Natalie Portman in the all yellow room in The Darjeeling Limited / Hotel Chevalier. The monochrome, the towel on her head... everything is just so good.
What's the quickest, easiest way to dress up a pair of pajamas?
SKP: Good shoes. It elevates any outfit and makes it feel more dressed up. Jewelry and a killer jacket also does the trick. I love throwing a blazer over pajamas and BOOM. You're good to go.
Less is more or more is never enough?
SKP: More is never enough! It's just too fun to layer unexpected pieces and patterns, we can't help ourselves. Controversial opinion, but minimalism is boring.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Anna: NIGHT OWLS. You do not want to come across either of us in the morning... It's a problem.
What are your favorite late night snacks?
SKP: I think my body is nearly solely sustained by SkinnyPop, peanut butter mms, sweet tarts ropes, and Diet Coke. It's a wonder I'm still alive.
Anna: Tootsie Rolls. Do NOT look in my bedside drawer...
What's your favorite place to wear pajamas?
Anna: In my bed (my favorite place in the world). Cuddled up, fresh out of the shower, watching Schitt's Creek. HEAVEN.
SKP: One time I showed up to Gramercy Tavern in NYC wearing pajamas, Manolo Blahnik heels, and a cowboy hat. If you've never been there, it's very fancy, which I did not know when I was invited. I walked in and everyone gave me the up-down. BIG TIME. I'm pretty sure they all thought I either must be famous or have recently escaped from an insane asylum. It. Was. Awesome.
What are your biggest pajama pet peeves?
Anna: I hate when pajamas feel gross after you wash them once. We used a really high quality cotton for our West of Breakfast sets so that the fabric holds up even after you wash them. They always feel crisp, which I love.
SKP: I get so bugged when pajama sleeve cuffs don't have buttons, so you can't roll them up! It makes me feel claustrophobic. When we were designing our sets, that was one of the first things I said was a must. AND POCKETS. Because duh.
Trick to being the life of the pajama party?
SKP: Don't take yourself so seriously! The best part about prancing about in pajamas all the time is that you're inherently being a little irreverent with your style choices. It's the ultimate high-low. So go ahead: put Cheetos on a charcuterie board, drink diet coke from a crazy straw, and eat leftover cake for breakfast. You are the most fun when you are HAVING fun!
What are you most excited for next?
Anna: It's crazy to think how recently we launched our brand, but we are so excited to build our pajama empire! We've been working on this collection for a year and a half, and we can't wait to see where we can take it next.
We are just having so much fun watching people get to experience and fall in love with our pajamas the same way we did. It's like our baby is all grown up and off to kindergarten, making friends. So rewarding and we can't get enough!
