The early days of lockdown (which feel like they were both years and days ago) had its fair share of fashion trends. There were the tie-dye lounge sets, the belted pillows, the dad sneakers (worn only during essential grocery runs or dog walks). But a new viral frock, which has taken the internet by storm, points to a broader trend: sweatpants are out; whimsical maximalism is in.
The piece we're referring to is, of course, The Strawberry Dress. Although the pink tulle tea-length dress, complete with ruffled and berry embellishments, was originally designed by Lirika Matoshi way back in July of 2019, the past two months have seen it explode across social media - from Instagram to TikTok to Twitter memes. Someone even digitized it for gameplay in Animal Crossing. It made its red carpet debut on model Tess Holliday at the Grammys in January and while it certainly garnered attention then, what has caused it to suddenly become an internet obsession?
Unlike its "Summer It Dress" predecessors, such as that blue off-the-shoulder dress from Zara circa summer 2017, or last year's $50 polka-dot number, also from Zara, which were both functional and affordable, Matoshi's piece is decidedly neither. Coming in at $490 and full of frills not quite suited for day-to-day wear (like, for example, one's commute to work - or even at work), The Strawberry Dress is a fairy tale unto itself. A fantasy break from the monotony of pandemic life. Because what reason is there to be functional at home? If we're still stuck in quarantine, the least we can do is escape through our fashion choices.
