Ty Haney, Outdoor Voices
"Queen of Athleisure" Ty Haney founded the millennial-favorite fitness apparel company, Outdoor Voices, in her 20s and it immediately became a sensation. From the #DoingThings motto to the new-agey office environment at its HQ in Austin, Texas, it seemed to be the epitome of a new type of business - young, female led, and dedicated to its mission. But a recent New York Times report reveals the internal struggles happening behind the scenes over the past few years. Haney butted heads with Mickey Drexler, the legendary retail leader behind brands such as Gap and J. Crew, who came on as an investor and chairman in 2017. Valuations for the company plummeted by millions, there was alarmingly quick turnarounds of top executive roles, stores weren't opening on time, and Haney herself was accused by employees of being "spoiled" and mercurial. Some said they were afraid to disagree with her on anything lest they get fired (and subsequently blocked from her Instagram). Haney "stepped down" (was removed) from her role as CEO in February but in the wake of the new reports, took to IG to somewhat defend herself, saying she "led with conviction" and "experienced both gender and generational differences firsthand" but was unable to elaborate further because of non-disclosure documents she signed.
