Khyber Pass
Hidden amongst the punk rock, t-shirt shops, and Korean restaurants on St. Marks, this Afghani gem is unassuming, and doubles as a hookah venue. This is exactly what may be an initial turn off to some, but the food is authentic Afghani and delicious. Dominated by yogurt sauces, the mantu is a meat-filled pasta marinated in a yogurt-meat sauce. Their eggplant appetizers are popular, as are the strange inclusion of Soju, a distilled rice liquor, in their cocktails. A vegetarian option would be a scallion turnover, served with yogurt dip and complimented with spiced pumpkin. Stop by for an early weeknight dinner to taste a little bit of Afghanistan in downtown Manhattan.
