When did this concept of public art take off in New York?
Mayor Mike getting behind projects like the Gates, or the Waterfalls, was very important; these types of projects no longer made people ask ‘why is this happening?’ or became lightning rods for community controversy. Instead, they became a matter of how great it is to have them in the public realm, with people seeing the impact art has on communities and local economies.
I would say Creative Time also played a very significant role, as did Public Art Fund, in terms of making the public realm a place where really great contemporary artists want to work and realize new projects.
