Dress The Part

Although Oscar Wilde would have you believe otherwise, you actually can be overdressed. Of course, it's not as dire as being underdressed, but to avoid veering towards either sartorial extreme, take note of the dress code on your invitation.

If it's "festive cocktail" attire, whip out your favorite sparkly, feathered, extra-adorned frock, mini or otherwise. If it's a "black-tie" affair, go for the gown - or channel YSL in a chic, sleek tux (yes, appropriate for the ladies too).

And if there is no explicit dress code indicated? Consider the time and location of the event and use your best judgment. A dinner party at someone's apartment? Probably not black-tie. A soiree that involves drinks and dancing and starts at 10 pm? Put on your party pants and have some fun with your look - this likely won't be a stuffy affair.

If you're really stumped, you can consult with the host or any other guests you know are going beforehand.
