There's nothing like the thrill of flipping through your favorite fashion mag and finding pages upon pages of stunning photographs (of stunning models wearing stunning clothes). Perhaps you've passed off your addiction to these glossy glamour shoots as a simple appreciation of imaginative images featuring fabulous shoes, but according to art advisor Marla Hamburg Kennedy, you just might be a fine art afficionado.
As a major player in the art world for a solid three decades, Marla should know a thing or two about quality photos—after all, the entrepreneur, curator, dealer, publisher, and art e-commerce site founder is the head of Hamburg Kennedy Photography, a preeminent private brokering service that functions as a selective salon for potential buyers. After amassing an impressive collection of 20th century and contemporary photography through HKP, it's no surprise that Marla's next venture is veering towards the art of fashion photography.
FPi (Fashion Photographers International) is set to launch as a virtual gallery complete with a Harlem viewing space, where visionaries like Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon can be represented alongside the industry's latest emerging talent. Since art and fashion are some of our favorite things, we spoke to Marla about the intersection of the two, the evolution of the editorial image, and the right way to display works in a DIY gallery.
