What is the process like when applying for help through the program?
There is no application process. Literally, you don’t even need to show proof of military service. You just need to show up. Our program administrator, who is also a licensed clinical social worker, Gerard Ilaria, is up at Cornell. When a referral comes into us, which could be through a family member, directly from the veteran themselves—any number of sources. It could be through a partner organization, another veteran’s organization. Either I or Gerard speak to the patient or speak to the warrior. Anytime somebody gets in touch with us, we try to get back to them within a few hours. At this point, that’s manageable. But we are growing. I don’t know how much longer that will be manageable for. Gerard then does an intake in which he learns a little bit about the warrior’s patient history, about their history, their deployment history, their military experience, then schedules an appointment for them to meet with our medical director up at Cornell. Then they prescribe the different treatments. [Photo via]
