Backlash
Given that she's not a member of the Latin community, the cover faced backlash as soon as the magazine shared it to Instagram. One of the most vocal critics of the decision is E! personality and reporter Lilliana Vazquez.
"When one of our own magazines, in this case Cosmopolitan Mexico, chooses to endorse someone that has no connection to our community and who has done nothing to create opportunity for our gente [people], how can you not be outraged," Vazquez said in an interview with the Daily Front Row, after taking to her own Instagram to voice her disappointment. "They have a responsibility to the reader to champion and amplify the voice of the Latinx community—by not doing so, you are sending the message that we are not enough."
"I have a huge issue with Arielle saying yes to the opportunity," she told E! "This opportunity was presented, and she accepted."
This week, Vazquez also hosted a discussion on Instagram Live to further illustrate why Arielle's cover feature is so problematic.
